HISTORY

On the southern shores of Lake Garda, Desenzano is a charming town and pleasant seaside resort.

An excellent starting point for trips and excursions, Desenzano has an artistic, historical and archaeological heritage that has its roots in Roman times. In the Middle Ages it was the subject of bitter fighting between Brescia and Verona, in the 15th century it came under the rule of Venice, and in modern times became a flourishing commercial centre.

The heart of the city lies around Piazza Malvezzi and Porto Vecchio, embellished by the 16th-century buildings of the Brescian architect Giulio Todeschini.

Don't miss the archaeological area, which houses the remains of a grandiose Roman villa from the 4th century A.D. with splendid polychrome mosaic floors, the Archaeological Museum, with one of the oldest ploughs in the world, and the scenic tower of S. Martino della Battaglia.

In recent decades Desenzano has also become the most renowned Garda resort for its vitality and entertainment offer, especially at night, thanks to a wide and varied presence of restaurants, bars and discos.
