HISTORY
The town of Arco, population 15,000, is located north of the Altogarda plain, the final part of the Sarca valley, which flows into Lake Garda.
The most important monument is the Arco Castle. Its enhancement through architectural recovery has returned one of the most beautiful and evocative manors in the Alps to the city. As it is one of the most famous and depicted castles, it is reproduced in various codices and paintings, including Albrecht Dürer's famous watercolour 'Le Val D'Arco - Fenediger Klausen', now in the Louvre museum.
Arco's mild climate is due to its location, protected by the mountains, and the proximity of the lake. In winter, the historical centre of Arco hosts one of the most famous Christmas markets in Trentino.
Arco also has some excellent natural and artificial rock gyms. For 20 years it has been the world capital of free-climbing: every year in September the Rock Master is held here, a climbing competition that attracts athletes from all over the world to compete for the world title.
The town is also a popular centre for mountain bikers: the surrounding hills and mountains offer numerous opportunities to practice this sport.
